I am also tech challenged. I do it using my Roku.

I’m 48 and just started the Peloton App. We don’t have a bike. The beginner strength program with Matty is great. He really goes over form, etc and you don’t have to use heavy weights.

It’s 30 minutes a day for 5 days and then you can repeat it. Try it for a month and see what happens.

Then, join the Facebook group HardCore On The Floor. The lady who runs that is amazing and it is an incredibly supportive and useful FB community. She has a calendar to follow as much or as little as you want.

I do no cardio though, so can’t help if you want that.

I started using the peloton app for strength training last January, right after I turned 50. I had not lifted weights since I was in my 30s. I also started tracking my food intake. I lost about 30 pounds and have gained a lot of muscle definition and improved my flexibility. I like doing the split programs and I like that I don’t need to go anywhere to work out. I get up super early and work out and it is done.

I use my Amazon fire stick to play it on my TV—there is a peloton app that you can download.

Peleton app

Lightweights arms, get 2lb weights

Get 20lb for lower body workout,

Or if you can afford lifetime I love lifetime

Do arms, lower body 3x a week. Walk the other days 3 miles to start.

You can use “screen mirroring” from your iPhone to smart TV, or watch on a tablet or laptop.

+1 for Peloton. I’m 50 and recently started lifting again (hadn’t done it since my 20s and 30s). I love it. The time goes by so fast!

I have the bike, but I think you can just do the app or also look into Peloton’s guide which might give you access to more. I also have the guide but haven’t set it up just yet.

The programs, as someone mentioned, provide a lot of good guidance on form, etc.

I love working out at home, but I also have more confidence stepping into a hotel gym when I’m traveling and using the weights.

It’s amazing what can be done with light weights, resistance bands, a kettlebell and a Pilates bar— all of which he bring with him (but I’ve started investing in bands and a Pilates bar and yoga mat of my own ).

I mean to use a private trainer for 12 sessions to get me started on strength training, balance, flexibility, bone density. I have a joint replacement, another to go, some low back issues, etc. and I’m not coordinated. So the risk of me getting injured is high. It has been amazing to have someone work 1:1 with me, safely, but also ramping up the challenge every week. My 12 sessions became 48, and I’m about to get another 12 or 24 sessions. Worth cutting back elsewhere to keep it up.

I started with Wegovy (Ozempic) in mid-April 2023. Added the trainer in June. 70 pounds down— and my body scans show less than 10% of my weight loss is muscle. I've been traveling this winter, and am shocked by how much better I feel— strength, endurance, etc. Plus, actual muscle definition in my arms and legs.

I hired my trainer through Dehenzel Training Solutions, which is all over NOVA and they have been fantastic to work with (and no— I’m not an employee— just a happy customer.

Can you give your trainers name?

I agree the peloton weight training programs are great to get started. You can do a la carte classes but the programs (a sequenced set of classes) and great for talking you through things and well curated to work the right muscle groups in a sequence that makes sense.

I just joined LT this week. Definitely feel like I need someone to show me what to do. I think I get 1 session free. I will have to get on that.

I really like the one peloton app. I have the bike but you may be able to do a free trial to see if you like the app which you can get without the bike. I find it’s really expensive to work with a trainer. When you sign up they have various strength training programs like 40 days of strength for beginners. I would just follow the program. don’t push too hard! I did one 45 min workout in an advanced class and couldn’t walk for about 2 days but found the beginner classes were great. You can get 10 on weights too. I think it’s a lot easier to be consistent when it’s a home workout personally but everyone’s different. You may be in a different life stage and looking to get out of the house.

I'm 50 and in meh shape.

I'd like to try weight training to build muscle and feel stronger, but I've never done it before.

I live in Arlington, what would you do to start? Where would be a good place to try?

I'm clueless about how to start this in a way or place where I won't be completely embarrassed by my inexperience.

WWYD?

Thanks for any guidance...
