I’m a very thin woman who has no rhythm and I don’t think you should think twice about this. Being thin does not actually correlate with dancing ability. Enjoy whatever classes you choose.

Do you have a link? When I google I only find a group in DC.

The young thin ladies dngaf about you. I was a thin and fit 20 something in barre classe and I can assure you that when I was there I wasn't thinking about anyone else in the room or anything else except getting my work out in and what I was doing after class. I have noticed on this board that overweight folks seem to have a real main character syndrome, always assuming thin people are constantly thinking of them. We are not. No one cares what you do. So pick a dance class that seems appealing to you and go for it.

OP, this is a little different, but have you considered ballroom dancing? It is not a heavy duty cardio workout, but it is decent exercise and so much fun! You don’t need a partner, but if he was up for it, your husband could do it with you.

I go to Elegant Dancing in Fairfax. There are lots of beginner level classes and the people there are very helpful and welcoming to new dancers.

Hope you find something you like and have fun dancing!

Greater Washington Dance Studio has adult ballet in the evenings. The women are completely normal and not gazzelles!

I am not great at estimating weight to height ratios, but there are plenty of people who aren’t “gazelles” by any stretch. They look like regular ladies you might see at the grocery store and exchange a smile with, then walk on by without another thought. They have varying levels of ballet, modern, and tap during the day, I’m not sure what else.
In Springfield, I have taken Kazaxe, which definitely has more diversity in age, size, and race, but you have to WORK. It’s pretty intense cardio if you go all in. Think Zumba but a bit less structured. I certainly can’t do all the moves because I am entirely too white. 😂 But the nice thing is it’s in a giant warehouse and the lights are off except for clubby party lights so no one is going to notice you unless you go up on stage with the instructors.

OP here. Thanks so much. Ballet NOVA is actually really convenient for me -- one of the reasons this was on my mind is because I was at REI a couple of weeks ago with DH and I was looking longingly over at Ballet NOVA!

Awesome! Maybe I’ll see you there!

Aww. I am always enthused when I see bigger people just doing whatever TF they want to do, physically. Please don't let anyone else get in the way of you enjoying your body and your life. We are definitely not all judging.

You might get better responses if you give us an idea of location, but I recently started taking Irish Dance classes with Maple Academy of Irish Dance and I can not say enough wonderful things about it! I'm 48 and one of the younger ones in the class, and Bill and Marni Maple are in their 70s and are really excellent at meeting each student exactly where they are, rather than expecting the same standards from everyone. My dance class has truly become the highlight of my week!

I'm a little over 50 with a BMI of 34 (5'7" 220lbs). I danced a bit when I was younger, and would love to go back to dance class but don't want to be the hippo in a room of gazelles, at least not if the gazelles aren't fond of hippos. I'm not in shape and wasn't a great dancer when I was younger either but I enjoy it.

Open to all forms -- ballet, hip hop, flamenco, whatever. But my body isn't going to do everything, if that makes sense. Anyone know of a studio/teacher/class where I could take a very beginning level class and feel comfortable?
