Blame commercialism. That’s what caused all of this. I went to Target 2 days after Christmas and they already had a ton of Valentine’s Day stuff up. All of it is just ridiculous. I guess we only have one day to tell our significant other they matter, according to them.

Buy the gift instead of wasteful flowers and an overpriced dinner on crowded Valentine's Day. Be more creative and maybe you won't have such a disappointed wife.

I just want flowers, bottle of wine and chocolates. And of course, fun times after kids go to bed.

DH and I each trade off every year making a Valentines dinner party with our kids. Our kids are little and obsessed with celebrating holidays. Pink tablecloth, pink candles, kids make paper decorations. We eat fun foods like heart pizzas, fondue and lobster. Dinner out at a restaurant on Valentines day? I can't think of anything worse. Surly waiters, overpriced prix fixe menus, slow service.

I am not Christian but give gifts on Christmas. I enjoy Valentine's Day even though it's a made up holiday.

Though I would never do the whole dinner date at a restaurant thing. I like giving/getting chocolate and flowers because chocolate tastes good and flowers are pretty. My DC loves valentines day and we use it as an excuse to make crafts and wear her favorite colors (red and pink). DH and I usually make something tasty at home or get takeout. Often I buy flowers and chocolate myself because they are just home decor and snacks -- I don't need them to be gifts.

It's okay to just enjoy the nice aspects of things and not worry about the rest. Life need not be a series of compulsory obligations.

If your wife is the type to expect card-flowers-dinner, then I’m sure she also expects a gift and you disappoint her every year.

I don’t want any of that crap, but the economy thanks you and your wife.
