FWIW, don't go in with high expectations. DS approached the college coach after admissions and was basically stiff armed. They do tend to bring in all they need through the recruitment process, even if none of them are getting $$ or a thumb on the scale.

IE- competitive and capable athlete that played for various travel programs but for a variety of reasons decided not to play for their HS.

Are they supposed to just reach out to the college's AD and inquire?

Email coaches, attend camps. My DC played soccer and no one on their travel team played soccer for their HS. Very few college coaches recruit through the HS

WHAT SPORT???

I hate when people don't state the sport because recruiting is incredibly different for some sports.

If it's soccer, the best players don't even play HS soccer and recruiting never happens through high school. College coaches go to club games. They will outright say 'we do not care about high school soccer'.

Kid is a senior and already offered admission. They have an on campus, in person, scholarship interview next month. They are wondering what the best time to broach it is.

Right now! And agree -- follow Coach Renee!

If I were you I would reach out to the coach urgently. The coach can probably free up some time to meet with DC while they are on campus.

It sounds like:
Your child played travel - but is not a recruited athlete
Your child has been accepted at a DIII school and is curious if they can play at the next level?

If this is the case:
Your child should become very familiar with the team and caliber of talent.
Your child should next reach out to the coach and include athletic profile and state that they are interested in learning more about the team and to see what the logistics are for trying out. If you are planning on attending an accepted students event - ask if during the visit if you can schedule time to meet.

OK- thank you all for the info. I just wanted to be sure we weren't stepping out of our lane.

It wouldn't be different had they played for the HS, btw.

Sorry, I should say the above is the process if you haven't applied yet. If your kid has gotten in and wants to walk on, they should also email the coach.

Kid should email the coaches. Include information about grades and scores.
