I think each magnet program accepts 30 students per year. My student graduated Biomed 2 years ago and really liked it. There were several students who used it as a premed choice. Not my kid though

BioMed is short for BioMedical Engineering. It is a major that sits at the intersection of Biological Science and Engineering. Lots of opportunity for research and building things but requires a deep understanding of biology and could require understanding or at least teamwork with collegeaues in other Science fields. Think genetics, anatomy, physiology, Kinesiology.

It's great, a lot of work but small cohort means a lot of individual attention and college placements are really good.

Biomed is also PLTW. Actually I think they may use PLTW for the academies as well.

@00:34 - I get the impression that most people are referring to Wheaton Engineering when they say PLTW. I just realized from DC’s acceptance letter that BioMed is also PLTW. (That may just be me though.)

I have not been paying attention lately but pre-pandemic, Wheaton has one of the best PLTW program in the nation.

I agree with all of the above regarding the teachers. DC was in the biomed program and graduated recently. They had a great experience. Their teacher for AP bio and biomedical innovations was excellent as well. DC loves math and took the mult class and Physics C class. They found the teachers very approachable and learned so much. Just know, however, that there is a lots of memorization in biology and too much art and drawing in the first year biology. DC hates art so this was painful the first year, but in subsequent years, whenever they worked in groups, they would delegate the artistic/graphics/visual presentation tasks to others LOL.

DC got into both engineering and biomed. I hear so much about engineering, but think he might like biomed more. But I couldn’t find out much from searching this forum. We’ll def go to open houses. He loves math but didn’t get into Blair magnet.
