If you have a significant problem, you can expect a lot of gaslighting, denial, and minimization from admin or an inability to effectively handle it

Your intel is correct.

It’s old timers who remember when the school was super neighborly and close knit to the point it felt almost like a small private school who are lamenting the changes.

Nonetheless, it’s still a great school and more neighborly than most schools in the county. Most of Olney/Brookeville is neighborly. And Greenwood has good demographics.

It used to be a really special place thanks to families with parents who went to school there and really involved families. The school parties used to attract moms, dads, and even grandparents. Parents regularly volunteered. It was very small town friendly. Now it’s just a politely friendly atmosphere without the real connections we used to have.

It’s still a good area though. Get into the local pool in tanterra if you can.

Realistically, other schools that felt like that either changed after the pandemic and/or economy changes where both parents having to work..

They do really poorly with kids with exceptionalities...watch your kid closely to make sure their learning at an appropriate rate and not going significantly left behind..

I’m the 9:25 poster, and I don’t disagree with the pp’s assessment that Greenwood is “just fine.”

Just fine. Meh.

But there are some teachers who are checked out. And it’s easy for kids to either coast or even get left behind simply because nobody is challenging them. Some excellent teachers have left in the last handful of years or so, and it’s obvious to see the difference between awesome teachers and those who barely phone it in.

Having said that, you will find that everywhere.

At least Greenwood is in a family-friendly area where everyone is neighborly. It’s as close to Mayberry as you’ll find in MoCo.

I think these threads attract the mostly dissatisfied families and are not very helpful. We have two kids in Greenwood, are involved in a lot of activities at the school, know a lot of families, etc. and it is fine.

A lot of checked out teachers used to coasting thanks to “easy” kids. Very few teachers bother to challenge students. It’s easier to say all the kids are average/meeting expectations than push kids to excel.

You need to push to get your kid tracked for enrichment early on…and then closely monitor to ensure they actually receive enrichment.

The parents seem less satisfied overall with the current administration. The kindergarten team is great but unfortunately a lot of bad apples in the subsequent grades.

I've had a terrible experience there and know a few families in the area who've pulled their kids out recently
