Could they have been camellias? They bloom in winter and I can see how someone might think they look a bit like a cherry tree.

A few weeks ago I was driving and noticed a clump of flowering trees, in full bloom! Looked like some type of cherry. It was a pretty wintry day, and we hadn’t had any warm days recently. It was so perplexing!
