Aww. Thanks for sharing. This is a sweet story. My teenage niece didn’t know how to pump gas because she drove a hybrid and it never needed gas since she only drove 2 miles to and from school.

My aunt is in her mid-70s, drives regularly, and has never pumped gas. I assume she knows how, but I'm not sure. She used full service when that was a thing, and it's been my uncle's job forever since then. Now it's one of her fun facts about herself.

I learned to drive late in life, and was lucky enough to find a gas station that offered full service. When they changed that practice, I didn’t realize it, since they very kindly continued to offer me full service. Shortly before I moved to another city, the person who consistently helped me at the gas station patiently showed me how to pump my own gas, and supervised me a few times to ensure that I did it properly and was aware of common safety risks. He also showed me how to check the oil. I really miss those guys — and truly appreciate their kindness.


As far as I know, my mom never pumped her own gas. The two gas stations that she regularly used in DC offered full service.

People from New Jersey.

When I went to college, one of my new friends was from NJ and she went way out of her way to go to the only full serve gas station in our college town. She has since learned.

My 83 year old mother knows how, and did for many years, but at this point she goes to the full serve and lets the nice man there do it for her.

Okay, so there are people who never learned how to drive a car for whatever reason. Do you know of people who have managed to learn to drive but cannot fill the car with gas? They don’t know how or will not learn. I guess they can always use full serve stations or depend on other people to handle the task.
