^ we didn't have AP stats then - at least not atTJ (which I assume means it wasn't really anywhere in Ffx county... if I remember, it was sort of considered a gut course to take stats)

Really? What did seniors do after AB junior year?

haha - the vast majority of the "really advanced" TJ students took calc senior year.
But those who were even more ahead took... differential equations, I think?

DP. It would have been extremely rare for a junior to take AB. If you were in calculus as a junior, you were strong enough at math to take BC calculus. If there were a few juniors in AB, I assume they took AP Stat as seniors.

OP's kid is a very strong math student. Let's not set crazy standards here.

Take AB because the kid has some gaps to reinforce. As a PP noted, if AB is easy and the kid has time and interest, the kid can study up a bit to cover BC material on their own. Or can do BC the year after and have time and energy for more demanding classes in other subjects, or ECs.

You can do it either way now: precalc to BC in two years, or precalc to AB to BC in three years.

I would do AB then BC. It’s more important in the long run to master the material than to race to the finish line.

My friend's son had almost a 100% (A) in precalc, took BC in 11th and really struggled. My kid will be taking calc AB next year and is doing well in AP Precalc

I personally wouldn’t suggest BC for a student with less than an A average. My student had an A in PreCalc as a sophomore. The students wanted to take 5 APs this year and a 4th year language. I suggested they think long and hard about AB/BC with that load. They decided on AB and are bored but they always had high As in math, even though they don’t love math. Their AB teacher said they could skip BC and do multivariate next year but said she wouldn’t suggest that for most students.

You probably want a solid A in PreCalc to go to Calculus BC. What does she want to do? What does her teacher say?

For clarification, do you mean take Precalc AB then Calc AB and then Calc BC? or something else?

Depends, what does she want to study in college? I heard that if they are interested in History or Business/Finance, AB is fine.

Our school only allows kids with an A average in precalc and an A on the precalc midterm to take BC Calc.
