Sharks, Hoovers, and Bissells are meant to be disposable machines these days. They aren't meant to be repaired. In fact, the belt broke on my Shark and the company wanted around $100 for a new powerhead assembly on a $150 vacuum cleaner. Back in the day, I could have just bought a belt for $3 on my old school Kenmore.
You need to buy a vacuum from a vacuum shop if you want a brand that's repairable such as Miele, Sebo, Riccar, Aerus, etc. Unfortunately, these come at a hefty price.

Sadly this seems to be my experience, when you have pets - it's the brush-roll and pulleys that often get compromised and they don't have replacement pulleys or brush-rolls available). Even you if clean the brush rolls regularly....cat hair finds a way...

Shark Navigator. Also easy to order parts from their website when something breaks. I use it on carpet and hard floors.

I bought a very inexpensive Bissell upright after seeing it used on the GoCleanCo IG acccount and it has a nice wide path for my basement. I think it was about $100 at Target. It's loud and I'm sure not a sealed vacuum like my more expensive machine but it does the job. She recently featured a purple Kenmore canister that seemed to have a lot of features too.


I also went with a Bissell for my basement because the head is wider. I really like my Shark and think it's a bit better than the Bissell but the head is a little too narrow for large, open spaces.

My cleaning lady recommended a shark upright (Costco has the one I bought and been just fine for 4 years) when asked this same question.

Go with Shark. I have two now (like other PP I keep one per floor) and they have been fabulous. I’m on year 11 for the oldest.

I'm a firm believer in keeping a vacuum on each level of your house. Whenever I buy a new machine it starts on the main floor where it sees the most action. From there, the old one either goes down to the basement or up to the 3rd floor to clean the bedrooms.

Does anyone have an inexpensive (<$150) upright vacuum that they feel does a good job on carpeting? We just finished our basement and it's a sea of wall to wall carpeting. I'm already sick of dragging my Miele canister up and down the stairs and am looking for something relatively cheap to just leave down there for my teens to use. I know things won't last forever in that price range and all the various Hoover, Bissell, and Shark models are overwhelming.
