HS. Takes bus in the morning. Stop is 2 blocks from our house and last stop on the run. Bus actually comes around same time, even a few minutes later than local HS bus.

Afternoon is a different story. Kid is last stop, and long bus ride leads to migraines. I pick up usually. Also, no activity busses to our stop. If I can't pick up, kid can take city bus/Metro combo. It's not too bad.

What magnet program OP and where are you coming from? The answers won't be particularly relevant or interesting if you don't specify.

My high school magnet kid (Blair) gets up about 6am, packs her lunch, walks across the street to the bus stop at 6:50am and takes the bus to school. Magnet bus home is a few blocks further away. Home about 430pm unless staying for a club. Long day.

My routine is to get up usually after they have left and get ready for work. Yay for independent kids.

I was going to say that sounds like a short day. DD up at 6, walks to bus, bus comes around 6:50 and then back home 7 after activities.

My son wakes up at 5:45 and we are out the door at 6:05 to drive to his bus stop that is about 3 miles away. He’s on the bus for an hour each morning to Poolesville. We carpool with another family for the afternoon, so he gets home about 4:20 (extended day goes until 3:30). It’s a long day.

My kiddo takes the bus that leaves at 6:55 from DHS to Seneca. I have a dear friend who picks up my kiddo at home at 6:45 and takes him there. They ride the same bus home and get picked up sometime around 3:10.

The activity busses only run locally so I have to pick up for after school activities but fortunately since he’s older he can walk to other places or just hang if I am picking up and running a bit late.

Forgot...the reason we do this is because the school bus leaves Wheaton HS at 7.01 AM whereas school starts at 7.45AM. An extra 20 minutes in the AM is precious!

We drive in the mornings and the kids take the bus home. This was most important when our kid was at TPMS and had to get on the bus a full hour before we’d have to leave to drive. For Blair, it’s more about convenience and getting to spend some time together in the morning, and it works with our schedules. We have had bad luck with carpools in the past, and didn’t even try going that route.

I will assure you in advance if you have a MS student. The idea of them transferring at Blair when 2000+ HS students are arriving at the same time was very nerve wracking. It is fine. Especially the first weeks they have lots of security and other staff helping the kids navigate. After that the kids are generally in “packs” and they do fine on their own.

Our nearest stop is one mile away. We drop our DD off in the morning. On the way home they either walk or if a parent is available they are picked up.

All MS and HS magnet kids that are in the lower part of the country ride the same magnet buses from across the county to Blair. At Blair they redistribute to buses going to their individual magnet school. The afternoon is the reverse.

So, for example, it is much faster to get a bus to/from Blair and Eastern. Takoma Park is further.

For those of you with kids in magnet programs, do you carpool or does your kid take the bus? Where can I find the bus schedules/stops? How much extra time does your kid need if using the bus? What is your typical morning routine like? Please specify the school your child attends and your home school or area where you live to give an idea of the commute. Thanks!
