Usually that is served up with a bad attitude and martyrdom about how much work they do. Also turning their back on other volunteers without bothering to ask them their name or talk to them. Or if they do they will ask fun questions like "do you even have kids at this school?" No, thanks. We will be too busy to attend the next "fun" event.

They make more work for the rest of us. Hey, let's do an event at 2pm on a Tuesday! Sign up to volunteer -pretend you are a teacher. My parents were very good parents. They never would have come to school in the middle of a workday. They expected the school to respect their busy lives and they respected teachers as professionals.

I just don't get their behavior. They constantly ask for volunteers and want more people involved, but they clearly mostly just want people who they already know (because their kids are friends, are in the same activities, or they're neighbors or whatever) and they view me as an outsider. It often feels like they are like "We desperately need volunteers! No, not you." It's feels pretty bad.


I had a similar experience. I ended up taking directly to school staff about volunteer opportunities and have had great experiences. I still do a few things for the PTA, but I accept that I will always be an outsider.
