Yes in 8th grade they have midterms and big tests at the end of the 2nd quarter in the high school level classes.
Two weeks over the holidays is more than a proper winter break.

Both my kids are in APS (current HS and MS on accelerated tracks) and never had "midterms" in MS.
The issue is not having time to make up work/tests before end of quarter.
My 8th grader has a geometry midterm, world geography midterm, major English essay and their science project all in the next ten days.

While I’m sure your future 6th grader will be fine, I feel like the days are past of taking a “ski week”. That’s what winter break was for, or the three day weekends in Jan and Feb of which there are a few.
Sorry I meant this weekend MLK and Prez. So exams are not this week so they could go away?
