I'm a teacher and seeing kids faces as they scan the crowd and don't see a parent at these events is heartbreaking.

Only you know what your kid/family needs.

That's 5x better than a swim meet!

But to miss work? School level? That the kids doesn't even care about? No.

Does your kid want you there? Then go. If your kid doesn't care, you decide what works for you. But don't make your decision contingent upon how well or poorly you think they may do, else you risk sending the message that your kid isn't worth your time or interest unless they're a winner.

Why wouldn't you - what else is going on in your life that would prevent you?

No, unless my kid asked me to or told me it was important to them. My kid was just in the school spelling bee but it was not important to her and she didn't want to do it. I didn't attend.

I will always attend things they are excited about or that they value.

Of course! I mean I guess if it was some school instigated event that all their classmates were doing and they didn't care about then perhaps not. But if your kid is excited why on earth wouldn't you be there to support them?
