In my experience, there’s more risk. I know plenty of older people who don’t have contact with children. These folks have avoided Covid despite not being particularly cautious. Children are falling ill with various bugs fairly often right now. With parental leave being limited, they’re more likely to come to school sick—sometimes with meds to help cover/cope with symptoms.

COVID is here to stay, part of the seasonal cold and flu season. Yes some occupations will place a person at greater risk of exposure.

Teaching is one of those occupations that will put one at a greater risk of exposure. You are going to be in a relatively closed space with hundreds of kids per day if teaching middle or high school. Elementary school kids are just germ factories.

So you are going to have to choose how/if you want to minimize risk.

I'm a teacher and while we spend a lot more time in closed settings than someone who is just walking in and out of public areas, it probably depends heavily on what you're teaching. An ECE teacher or a teacher who works with students who need a lot of hands-on assistance is different from a high school Calculus teacher whose students don't get very close to him/her and who generally understand respiratory hygiene.

HS teachers spend about an hour with each group.

ES teachers spend all day.

Is that the same as a store? You tell me.
