Lived in Knoxville for 10 years or so, and never owned or needed a Bible. Knoxville is a great town.

Greenville is way, way too Southern for me too for the record. I would never want my kids to grow up there.

My mom likes with us and needs a handicap accessible house. Thought it would be easier to build a small, one level house with those specifications which we would also use to age in place.

This will sound crazy, but check out Oakwood, Ohio, which is a close-in suburb of Dayton.

It fits your description of what you want, and is a bit of a hidden gem, although weather would not be as warm as SC and probably just a bit worse than TN.

I’m not sure Greenville is that inexpensive. Is it important to you to build a house vs buy one? Why? I’m not sure that’s usually compatible with walkability.

I have family in Knoxville and think it's a great town. But be warned, during covid a lot of wealthy families from the coasts moved to Knoxville, partly because schools were open. And they drove housing prices really really high, which is trickling down everywhere in the city.

I've only visited Knoxville once but I immediately thought that I could retire there. Beautiful area, lots going on, smart/educated people. I have a friend who lives in Greenville, but have never been. But the way she describes it, it feels way too southern for me. Which might be a pro for you! But too many Trump types for me.
