Madewell is an affordable option with a lot of not-overly-trendy pieces. Some of their items skew younger, but I'm in my 40s and have bought jeans, tees, sweaters, and dresses there that are pretty classic and fit my middle-aged body well.

I would suggest Everlane, Quince, Frank and Eileen, and Vince. Very few prints and all well made.

I dress more interestingly now in my 40s than I ever did before. I have a nice figure and better understand how to dress it.

I like Poshmark, OP, and often buy vintage collections of Anthro. Not only is it cheaper, but that way I don't have the same clothes as everyone else. I buy staples on sale at J Crew (just bought a new batch of their tissue turtlenecks at $19.50 each!).

Depending on the area, but Nordstroms frequently has different shops within the store. There is a lesser priced section of simpler, more traditional clothes. Macy's has the same type of department. There are usually in out of the way parts of the store.

We clearly have different definitions of affordable.

Some variation of this can be found pretty much everywhere, from stores like Nordstrom to options like everlane.

Affordable and quality mean different things to different people. Maybe look at places like everlane first. If you dislike either the affordability, the quality, or the classic-ness, then you will have narrowed down your focus a bit.

I get your question though. Decades ago I could have simply responded with: Woodies and Lord and Taylor. Then added in Hecht’s if you wanted more affordability, Saks if you wanted a higher quality, and Talbots if you wanted to go harder core on the classic part.
