Not true. Usually a few get in from Eastern. Not many, but probably because not many apply. The Bs would be an issue though. Most kids coming into Blair magnet have high GPAs in MS.

How many Bs? There will be many hundreds with all As and top scores competing for the same spots.

Whether your child is in the humanities program or not should not impact their admission chances. FWIW, in DD's year there were a lot of strong math kids in the humanities program which made for a very strong math team for Eastern. They did well in competition against places like Frost which is always praised for having strong math. There are kids every year who go from Eastern to Blair's STEM program.

Some of the math teachers at Eastern. I am thinking of one male Alg teacher who is particularly terrible but there are bad teachers everywhere. The Geometry teacher who I think teaches most of the humanities kids is very good.

There is a child in my kid's Eastern cohort who rode the bus to Blair for Pre-Calculus in 8th grade. No, Eastern doesn't offer Algebra II in-house but they do work with families to get them the acceleration they need and the proximity to Blair helps.

DD went to Eastern and is currently a senior at CAP. She knows kids from Eastern who went on to Blair stem magnet, Wheaton bioscience and engineering magnets, RMIB and Kennedy’s leadership program. One advantage to going to Eastern (and TPMS) is that it makes you eligible to apply to magnet programs that are available only to DCC students.

They really go everywhere.
We pulled my kid from MCPS and went private for high school.
She had no interest in a magnet program after Eastern (not a great experience socially) and didn't apply.

Not all choose CAP or RMIB though.

DD has mentioned she thinks it's more like half the kids get in somewhere but lots of kids who get in go back to their home school. One of her best friends got in to all the top ones like CAP, RMIB and went to her home school so she had less of a commute. One thing that's great about Eastern is that the students don't make conventional choices. It's a really diverse group.

The answers aren't really relevant for your child if they are at Eastern because the current 8th grade was a lottery class.

The previous classes were either application or universal selection so you can't really compare but in the past, this year's 9th grade and up, lots of Eastern kids have gotten in to magnets. But it's never been like Takoma where a huge percentage of the class continues to Blair. Eastern kids spread out to a wide variety of schools all over the county including a dozen home high schools, the magnets at Blair, RM, Wheaton and some to private. You'll probably find the highest concentration at Blair due to the two magnets and because Eastern is a Blair feeder.

My Eastern kid got into Blair, and so did others.

I can’t speak for Eastern, but upcounty at Clemente there was a lot of handwringing about “all magnet kids didn’t go to a HS magnet”. The coordinator dug into two years worth of articulation and determined that every kid in the magnet ended up in an advanced program of some type. It just that some of them chose their home high school programming, even though they were admitted to one of the magnets or were offered a spot after initially being placed in the wait pool.

In other words-don’t rely on parent word of mouth to know the outcomes or reasons for other kids HS placements.

Do the eastern humanities program get into the MCPS magnet programs for HS. My kid is interested in the RMIB/Blair program but looking at the hard grading in humanities courses in eastern humanities program. I wonder if all the B's will help them to get in any magnet programs. Has any of your kids got into Blair or RMIB from this program?
