Wake up. Get dressed. Drink water.
Go for a run.
Get home, have coffee and breakfast. And more water.

That’s it.

49 here. I don't usually eat or drink anything before I run in the morning. If it's really hot outside, I may have some water. I basically get up and drive everyone to school. After dropoff, I hit a trail on the way home and run three to five miles. Then home to shower and eat breakfast and off to work.

WFH made this whole process better. I also have the creaky ankles problem. I wake up at 6, have coffee and a piece of toast with a banana. By the time I've made sure the kids are out the door to school (I have teens), my ankles are sufficiently warmed up. I run and am ready to work by 8:30. Once I've dealt with anything urgent, I make myself some more breakfast and have another cup of coffee.

Thanks for the thread, it’s inspiring me! I keep meaning to wake up and get out the door…… but get struck in the stay in the bad part.

I wake up at 5:15, get out of bed, pee, drink a glass of water, get changed and head out the door. If I add anything else to this routine, I end up procrastinating and don't make it out in time. I have to get out the door before I have time to think too much about how early it is. I do this 2-3 times during the work week and run 3-4 miles each time. On the weekend I go out later and drink coffee and eat something first. I don't really do any stretching.

44 here. I wake up about 30 minutes before I mean to get out of the door and have half a cup of coffee and half a pack (2 crackers) of belvita breakfast crackers. That helps me pop before I leave and not get a headache but not too much that it weighs me down.

I need to work on doing mobility/warmup before I run. I often just stare at my phone.

In that time, I drink coffee, check emails/texts I missed overnight, feed the cat and clean the litter box, lay out my things for the day, make the bed, etc.

I do not eat anything before running, because I want an empty stomach. I have something light (an apple OR a hard boiled egg) after my run. I'm genuinely not that hungry in the morning.

To add: I don't stretch (not proud of this). I do walk 5-10 minutes before and after my run.

I am also 43 years old. I run 2-3 times per week. 2 shorter runs (around 4 miles) and 1 long run (6-10 miles). My shorter runs are on weekdays and I am out the door without eating anything-- usually around 6am. I do have a quick drink of water.

On weekends, my long runs are usually around 10am so I eat a full breakfast around 8am-- eggs, toast, fruit. I don't drink coffee.

Stretching takes 3-5 min. And I have plantar fasciitis and chronic back issues so I’m frequently icing while stretching.

I don’t tend to eat or drink anything first unless it’s really hot - then I have some water. That’s because if I stop to have coffee I’ll never get out of the door on time in the mornings.

I also have noticed that my feet and ankles tend to be creaky. I do a very short dynamic warm-up that includes mobilizing my feet and ankles and like half a block of “cariocas” (grapevines). I also walk for 3-5 minutes before I start.

What is your routine if you run outside in the mornings?

Coffee? Fruit? Protein shake?

How much stretching do you do?

I used to run in the mornings when I was younger and just get up and go. Now I’m mid-40’s, no longer run regularly and don’t have the same level of energy.

I am just getting back into it, training for a half-marathon. I feel like I need coffee or something to jump-start me. Also my ankles and calves are super tight in the mornings and I was dealing with tendinitis a while back so need to be conscious of not doing too much too soon.

Anyone here in their 40’s that feels the same and has a good routine for regular outdoor runs?
