Restorative Justice circles are used at the elementary school. The kid that was bullied has to listen to some made-up story about why they were annoying to the bully and that’s why they bully them. Then the victim has to look in the bullies eyes and describe how they felt during all the bullying events. This part often re-victimizes the kid who was bullied. And, no punishment is given to the bully. The bully walks away laughing on the inside very satisfied that they so negatively hurt the victim. It can be scary and hurtful times two for the victim because they had suffered from many bullying events already.

ES Teacher here and I don’t really know what it is exactly. I was wondering if maybe this is a HS thing. I asked my MS teacher spouse about it and she said she thinks it is possibly used a little in MS. She also doesn’t know much about it because she has never used it.

Sounds like the PP is conjuring up a boogyman.

It is sometimes used in ES. The goal is to get the offender to understand the harm they cause and change. In practice, I believe it serves only to re-traumatize victims and leaves them feeling they have to forgive kids who’ve done nothing more than say they’re sorry.

Yeah if it ES they will talk to both kids. If there was a threat they will talk to parents. Either way nothing will happen. If it happens repeatedly or if it was severe they will not be put at the same table. In the event of threats if parents insist they will remove them from the same specials rotation (if the kid is only in rotation and not class). If they are in the same class nothing will happen. We had a kid threaten DD (not serious but it was overheard so they had to do something). They contacted us and that was that. Had a boy repeatedly push and threaten her he was removed from specials rotation and that's it. Oh and there are the special ed kids who are hitter or spitters, nothing ever happens at all to them. They don't even contact you for that. You find out from your kid and then the teacher when you press them on it.

Admin will privately speak to the victim and the one doing the bullying. Nothing else will occur. The conversation is the consequence. Admin may have the teacher keep the children separated.

What about when one boy pulls the pants down of another? What happened to the pants puller ?

DS confided in me that he witnessed one of his classmates was being bullied by several other classmates, that it was getting out of hand, and he reported it to the teacher and administration. What are the next steps for the school?
