Thanks to PP who suggested the Realistic Fiction list and googling it. Good place to start.

Thanks to 20:21 for the specific recs. I haven't heard of most of these which is perfect.

20:55 I know she liked the movie The Hate U Give - good idea to have her try the book, too.

Based on your description it sounds like she likes realistic fiction. Google “realistic fiction” and have her poke though a few lists that pop up and see if anything sounds interesting to her.

Wendy Mass books like A Mango-Shaped Space or Jeremy Fink and the Meaning of Life

Shannon Hale's Princess Academy or Goose Girl

Anything by Jude Watson, especially the Postcard series

Margaret Peterson Haddix's Among the Hidden series

Thanks for the suggestions. We've been to the library and bookstore recently but she's very picky and would rather go home without a book at all than borrow something that doesn't appeal to her. I went ahead and borrowed a couple YA books that I thought looked good on the off chance she'll pick it up when she's bored.

I would take her to your library or local bookstore. The librarian/ bookseller can provide her with some suggestions.

My about to turn 13 year old loves going to the bookstore and browsing. She prefers Barnes and Noble to browse and get ideas b/c they have a large YA section. If she knows what she wants she’ll get it at our neighborhood bookstore or get it from the library.

Pp who suggested Judy Blume

While I didn’t read a lot of Judy Blume (I prefer other genres), I thought these would be the kind of books you’re looking for. However, it appears that at least one book (Forever) may deal with sex and I don’t know if there might be others that would be problematic as well.

I encourage you to look at the Common Sense Media reviews to make sure they’re appropriate for your daughter and not intended for older readers.

Great classics. I should have also mentioned she prefers modern day settings though I will share these, too!

DD is 13 and I'm hoping to encourage her to read more and would love some book recommendations. I'm finding it tricky with her moving into YA.

Some preferences:
- Likes school-based/ everyday life books
- Likes books here different chapters are from a different POV

- No fantasy/sci-fi/ghosts
- Not about someone moving, someone dying, someone discovering their sexual identity
- Not primarily romance or crime focused

Past books DD has liked:
Millionaires for the Month
New From Here
Cyclone
Rob Buyea books

Graphic novels DD has liked:
The Baby-Sitters Club
Raina Telgmeier books
Shannon Hale books
Be Prepared, El Deafo
