For anyone with rising sophomores through seniors next fall, you should check out the precollege summer residential programs through VCUArts. Great way for kids to spend three weeks experiencing one of their arts disciplines (and getting their portfolio ready).

Does anyone know what the job outlook is like for VCU Arts? My daughter considered SCAD as well, but the cost is crazy expensive (scholarships only make a slight dent). Also, I think there is some value in studying art a general university rather than just an art school. The new building sounds exciting as well as the interdisciplinary programs.

I heard this too-i think you need a 3.5 to maintain.

Honors yes you have a private room, but the building was a mental institution, and my kid would not enter that building and forgo honors because of it. Heard many stories of it being haunted. Honors do have first day of classes but still are shut out of classes. There are many 4.0 kids in the art department, no one really cares, it is more about your talents.

Stop watching scary movies.

I thought they did offer merit based on GPA and Sat scores- at least based on the website. Not sure about haunted honors dorms.

In addition to the reasonable in-state public, Richmond is definitely a decent city for artists (at least compared with the other college towns in the state).

Thanks for sharing about the new building and partnerships!

She feels like she worked really hard to get a high GPA in all honors and AP classes and get a high test score (upper 1400s) - but if she went to VCU, she would feel like she didn't even need to work as hard as she did. Its not the best attitude, but I think a lot of people in her situation might feel the same way. Having said this, my kid still acknowledges that VCUArts has a solid reputation.

If she is pursuing an arts degree she should focus on the prestige of the VCUArts program and not VCU as a whole. Acceptance rate for arts is comparable to acceptance to prestigious universities. But, may not be the best for for your student. My DD was also accepted for Studio Art at Virginia Tech. Yes, VT higher ranked overall and offers a different campus atmosphere. But even VT art faculty acknowledged they would choose VCU art program over their own unless there was some compelling interest in VT or desire to get a lot of attention from Art faculty and/or be a big fish in a small art pond.

Another way to look at it is that without getting the high stats, merit aid and honors college might not be on the table.

It’s her portfolio that will matter.

I believe VCUArts is one of the top public art schools in the country - an incredible deal for Virginia students.

Hi- I was wondering if anyone has had any experience with VCU Arts or its Honors college. For the Honors College, I hear that you get early registration (which pretty much guarantees getting the classes that you need or want) and you get a private dorm room. Is there anything else special about the Honors College? Also- any thoughts/insights regarding VCU Arts. The cost seems doable for in state students given that many art schools are extremely expensive (even with merit). Also, what kind of merit have your students been offered in the past for in state students?
