No, OP. You need to put up whatever wall finishing is cheapest and easiest for you. It sounds like there are wood studs? Some kind of paneling will be easier than drywall.

Insulation is important for keeping the space comfortable, especially in winter. No way I would remove it.

So what, it is a basement. No one is going to care about panels - electrical work, yes.

Insulation is pretty expensive. I wouldn't remove it. I agree that drywalling is a PITA.

Do you....not understand what the insulation is there for? A really cheap way to hide it would be to hang up cheap fabric panels or even those canvas drop clothes.

Unless your basement is insulated and air-sealed from the rest of the house, it is conditioned space.

This is one of the biggest misconceptions, that somehow magically heat only flows where you send it. If you're heating the house, you're heating the basement.

If it is conditioned space, you need insulation otherwise you will get condensation and condensation leads to mold. You can add cheap paneling on top of the insulation and whitewash that.

I can’t afford a full basement finishing project and just want to brighten and make the space more appealing.

Right now there is this shiny metallic looking insulation stapled everywhere. It is ugly. I’m thinking of removing the ugly insulation and basically whitewashing the walls and adding a few lights, maybe painting the floors, and calling it a day.

I was in a house recently that is very similar to mine but in a colder climate where they have this setup, and it is fine. House built in 1986 and has been maintained very well. Is there anything that should give me pause before doing this?
