We enjoyed brunch with kids at Cookshop in Chelsea, followed by a walk on the High Line afterwards.

Eataly, 5 Napkin Burger, Becco, find a really good ramen place (can’t remember the name but we have gone to multiple and they have all been better than DC).

We did a food walking tour of the lower east side. Over 2+ hours we got a bagel, pizza, falafel, cookies, etc and got a tour of the neighborhood history. My 14 year old loved it. Next time we are going to do the Chinatown/Little Italy walking tour.

You could also walk the high line and then go to Chelsea Market and then sample dishes at the food stalls. A PP mentioned los tacos 1 and it looks like that is in Chelsea Market.

There are some good Japanese places around midtown. Not fancy sushi, more like yakitori. But it's good.

Serendipity-3 is a hit with any kid I know...the food itself is nothing too special, but giant ice cream creations in a silly atmosphere goes over well.

Veselka--Ukrainian food, not too expensive and sit-down without being too fancy.

Take the 7 train to Jackson Heights--you could find a food tour or just walk around and snack. Birria-Landia is a food truck that's supposed to be really good, and there's a lot of Indian food too.

If you want to try Sri Lankan food, you could take the Staten Island ferry. New Asha is supposed to be good but it's 1.4 miles from the terminal so you might be able to find something closer.

Yonah Schimmel is a classic knish bakery from 1910. If you're going to the Lower East Side, other fun options are Economy Candy and the Pickle Guys (you can get individual pickles if you don't want a larger container)

Through the years, my kids loved when we’d make a comparing/taste testing various of the same food item when visiting NYC (we go about once a year with the kids). We’ve done this with pizza, dumplings, ramen, tacos, ice cream, and, now that they are teens, coffee. So we sought out 4-5 ramen places and we all filled out ranking forms with categories established by us and the kids. It was a lot of fun and kept them really engaged - they helped research the places to go, they thought more deeply about what they were eating, and in hitting all of the places we visited some parts of the city we might not otherwise have gone to.

I would find an Ollie’s — and enjoy the dumplings. I would also go to La Caridad — or the nearest Cuban Chinese restaurant.

We want good food, can be offbeat, just nothing generic or overly swanky. Help! We're staying in Midtown near the Winter Garden but will go anywhere for something delicious!!
