RICA to mainstream is an unbelievably huge jump. Whatever you decide, I’d be sure you have a lot of support in place. I never even saw kids from ESESES mainstream and that’s a less restrictive placement.

It seems to me that either a counselor at Wootton or RICA should be helping with these types of questions. The key for a college search is to find the right fit for your child’s needs, interests, and comfort level. The right fit would also be a realistic placement based on grades, class rigor, and school requirements. AP is not always necessary.

I'd focus the plan more on the transition to college rather than worrying about the college. It's likely going to be a fraught transition, needing a lot of support. MC as a step to UMD or UMBC could be a lot smoother than jumping directly into a four year experience where support is more limited.

That's a hard one. I do think your child will have a better chance of getting into UMD from RICA than Wootton (unfair, but it is what it is). However, if your child does stay at RICA, they might not get the opportunity to practice in large classes and build their advocacy skills.

I am surprised that they will be placing your child back at their home school for the part-day option. I thought all kids were placed in either SESES or Bridge for a more seamless transition back. Is your child ready to be fully mainstreamed- even in 11th grade or will she need some self-contained classes? If so, I would not put her at Wootton.

I would go ahead and do the part-day option next year and then make the decision based on how that goes.

This would be for 10th grade with the intention that she would fully return to Wootton in 11th. She also has the option to remain at RICA though graduation if Wootton doesn’t work. We can also explore ESESES (Magruder) Bridge (Churchill), or SESES (RM).

Her mental health is doing great. She enjoys school and is doing great. RICAs class are all grade level—not honors. She has been receiving additional work and assessments to enable the Honors distinction for 9th.

As we look at a strategy for college, is staying at RICA a good plan? They offer some AP classes and she could take classes at MC for any class not offered at RICA. I was reading a thread about how admissions offices compare a student against their peers in that school. I know my kid is top of the class at RICA. She will be top 30-40% at one of the bigger schools. But then I wonder if the Special Education placement would be a ding?

I know we’re years away from college admissions but if I’m going to keep her at RICA I need to speak up at our next IEP meeting in Feb. If I think about where she would be successful, my first choice would be UMD. She’s a math/science kid and keeping her close to home would be good. There’s also UMBC.

I don’t have a college counselor to ask this question so I’m posting here. What do you think?

I don’t have a child at RICA. I have a mainstreamed, special needs child. I would take college acceptances (how admissions compare a child at Wooten v RICA) out of the equation. You should be considering what will a) keep her healthy and b) prepare her for college/real life. So if she needs to be at RICA for her mental health, that should be her priority, regardless of what colleges think. If she is healthy enough to go to Wooten, she should since it will offer her an opportunity for independence and will more accurately simulate a college experience.

Don’t have a child at Rica, but I agree with the above. First is always your child’s health. Second is creating the environment to give them the most independence and room to grow. Third is stretching. Sounds like she’s a good student and getting healthier every day. Give her the opportunity to display that by being in mainstream classes at the Honors/AP level at Wooten or whatever HS chosen. If that works then you can keep that up or sign on for the DE program at MC for 11th/12th.

Hopefully someone who has experience at RICA can give you real advice, but, it seems like she might be a great candidate for the dual enrollment program with montgomery college which I believe you can do from any high school. If there is some concern that she hasn't had enough AP classes at RICA, she will have the MC classes under her belt to show UMBC/UMD that she will be a successful candidate. UMD is a hard admit for a lot of majors for MCPS kids. I would definitely have a backup plan.
