My daughter is 2nd year and she likes it. It is not a big school but works well for her on pre-med track for now.

My son was admitted EA with what I think is generous merit. He goes to a non-W MCPS high school. 4.0 unweighted, I think 4 completed AP classes with 3 5s and 1 4 for scores, and a bunch of IB classes, though he isn’t in the diploma program (for scheduling reasons, which I think his counselor highlighted in her letter, if that matters). 1500 SAT, which he reported. He has good ECs (at least I think so), but nothing extraordinary. In his acceptance note the admissions person highlighted his leadership in a few ECs.
Not sure where things will end up but I see Case as a really good option and the aid makes it competitive with state schools, though I expect still more expensive.

OP here - I'll tell you my DD's stats but I don't think it will be of much use in your son's case. I'm reading many parents saying their son got a deferral and list their son's perfect stats.

Like the other poster said - 54% male and 46% female. I'm thinking that is a big part of the reason your son get deferred and my daughter was admitted. And why I'm reading of so many sons being deferred but not many daughters being deferred.

MCPS - 3.96/4.75, 10 AP classes/2 IB classes, Test Optional, attended Open House/two of their regional admissions events here/attended online events/opened emails, good ECs (some ECs that also lined up with their stated Chemistry major. Case seems to like that).

Thanks to the poster who knew the girl who didn't like Case because of the nerdy kids. Good info. My daughter is introverted, not the stereotypical sorority type but also not a video game, nerdy girl either.

I'm the PP--that was sort of this girl's situation--she didn't want to join Greek life but she also wasn't that into video games or other stereotypical nerdy interests. It felt like there was a social gap in this middle for her --if she wasn't able to transfer, she was thinking about joining a sorority even though she wasn't that into it.

Close friend graduated around 15 years ago. She enjoyed her time there and is pretty professionally successful. Liked cultural activities and volunteering in Cleveland. Intro classes are not that small, couple hundred people. The gender ratio was fine for her. A decent number of her sorority sisters married men they met there.

I have a sophomore at Case. The first semester was tough, classes are hard, it is colder and grayer than DC. Starting last spring, they found their people, and now are really happy and thriving. In addition, they found a great internship for this summer through the on campus recruiting.

My apologies for butting in...last year my son was deferred from from EA and ultimately accepted w/merit during RD. FCPS, CS major, 3.96/4.5, 1560, NMSF. We DID attend an "open house" prior to applying. Good luck!

This is based on the perspective of one young woman I know--so take it with a grain of salt. Though the gender balance is not too bad--54% male and 46% female, she felt the culture as whole felt somewhat male-dominated--especially in the STEM departments. Not in a negative, aggressive way or anything--more in a nerdy way where she felt they interacted oddly with her--odd treatment in teams/study groups etc.--and that she just didn't fit with their interests (lots of video games).

Overall in her view, the significant "nerdy" population that is fairly introverted (both males and females) and this plus the gender balance made it hard for her to find her people as a sort of average, somewhat extroverted young woman. She said people were nice enough, the classes were challenging but she did well, she liked Cleveland except for the cold. She ended up transferring to Virginia Tech though (which was in-state for her) and is much happier there. She's not very negative about Case, just felt it ended up not being the best fit for her.

I went there. Cleveland was actually a lot of fun: lots of restaurants, bars, museums, MLB and NFL teams, etc. About once a year we visited Toronto or Chicago to get out of town.

I didn't mind the cold and snow at all (it was nice to have snow as opposed to DC when you just get the cold).

Here come the Dobbs dorks.

Case is an excellent school for STEM, very underrated. Nerdy and not much school spirit, but a decent Greek scene for those who want a more traditional college experience.

Son was accepted with merit after being deferred from EA. We enjoyed the visit but ultimately ended up elsewhere for CS. There should be MANY threads discussing CWRU. I believe the most recent is only a month old. Congratulations!

My DD was accepted EA with good merit. It was one of her top choices going into the whole process and remains the school that all other acceptances will be measured against.

Obviously, DD likes Case and so do we (her parents) but I know not every school is perfect. For those with kids at Case or who are familiar with the school, what are the cons with the school? Don't bother replying if the only con you can provide is "It's in Ohio".
