Absolutely. A few broke up in April after they realized they weren’t going to the same colleges and wouldn’t stay together. That seemed extreme to me. Why not enjoy Prom and All Night Grad and all the other fun stuff together? Most of the couples I knew from my DD’s class of 23 broke up over the summer.

This is the correct answer. Don't be one of those losers who spends every Friday and Saturday night in your dorm room FaceTiming your high school girlfriend.

Only the ones who don't want to stay together.

We were at a wedding last summer with two 25 year old high school sweethearts. He went to Cornell, she went to SMU in Dallas. They had been together since 10th grade.

sure they do, also they break up over thanksgiving often.

My DS just broke up with his HS GF over thanksgiving junior year. They made it work for a few years but were too far apart and unable to see each other more than 1-2 times per semester. He wanted to date on campus and experience having a girfriend at the same school.

Or did that fade in the early 00s? Even an hour or two distance felt like you fell off the face of the Earth pre cell phones and FaceTime and before social media. But now it doesn’t seem like a big deal. And traveling to other colleges is such a breeze with apps for flights, public transportation and Uber. I wouldn’t be surprised if kids like having a significant other at a different college for an excuse to travel and go see them.
