Just give the school a heads up.

Current rules require that she be disenrolled. So when you get back you have to reenroll her. Only potential consequence I see, beyond inconvenience, is that she might end up in a different class when you get back. No one is failing a kindergartner.

If you’re doing early admission, you might have an issue because they might not take her back and they wouldn’t have to.

Ten days would include two weekends so it would be fine. They aren't going to disenroll her. We've done two week vacations combining weekend and holidays and it was fine.

FYI. Everyone is in school in late September, public and private.

Ask the school since chronic absenteeism counts against the school. They may just unenroll your child to avoid it.

It's fine. Just talk to the school. She's not going to fail school because she missed 10 days of K.

It’s fine. We did that in elementary and no issue.

Best case, they will treat it like an excused absence and won't be a big deal other than your kid having difficulty due to missing 2 weeks of kindergarten routine.

Worst case, they can treat this as unexcused absence and you could get referred for attendance improvement and/or have her unenrolled.

You could contact the school to get a feel for how they will handle it. Not how I would want to start my kid off at a new school, but you do you.

Yeah, unfortunately, with MCPS, your mileage varies a lot based on the school and admin team. So without knowing which school, it's hard to say if this will be really disruptive for your kid. That being said, do not, in the future, plan on 2-week-long vacations for your kid when you know school will be in session.

You can unroll them and reenroll them, but there won’t be any consequences for 10 days of absences in kindergarten. Will you be gone for 10 days total or is your 10 days including weekends?

Not looking for judgement here. This was a trip scheduled over a year ago before deciding my child to attend public school. This is my first child attending public school, so I have no clue how it would be handled. Simply asking for info, so I know whether I need to prepare my child for penalty or need to cancel the trip.

Thanks for your response.

If your kid is absent for 10 consecutive days, they may be unenrolled and you will have to re-enroll them. One of my kid's friends (in 8th grade) did that this year. You will need to work with your school on how to handle it.

Then why did you schedule a vacation for that time? Are you looking for actual advice or validation that what you did was okay?

No one is going to arrest you. Write a note like everyone else.

She will miss some of the new routines but will probably be fine after a few weeks.

Seeking advice: My child is starting kindergarten this fall and I have booked a 2-week long family trip at the end of September. Would my child face penalties for missing 10 days of school? Is there anything I can do? I don't want her to fail school during her first year
