From my kids’ friends - most either amicably/mutually broke up the summer before freshman year, OR stayed together and then one of the couple broke up with the other some time during first semester freshman year.

A couple are still together several years into college, but those are the exceptions.

None chose the same college as their gf/bf, most it didn’t factor at all, but a few did choose the geographic area of their preferred college to have the ability to visit the other.

My daughter met a great guy her junior year, stayed together through college though the schools were far apart and they’ve been married ten years.

My DS and his GF tried long distance and lasted until thanksgiving junior year. He broke it off because we wanted to be single for awhile in college. They were about 6 hours apart which really sucked.

Married 15 years with 2 kids. DH and I met summer before senior year of high school (different high schools same city). I already was set on my university - it wasn't in his list until he got a full ride plus living stipend.

Broke up end of summer, no longer speak.

Amicable split the summer before college (when they would be apart).

It’s only the beginning of junior year, would be surprised if they last that long ?

A handful of kids we know are planning to try long distance (maybe 20%), but most recognize they'll want a fresh start in college. I'm actually surprised by the number of couples who ended their relationship early senior year. Hook up culture seems to be thriving.

They went to college together, got married, imediately after college had a kid and now divorcing. She cheated, not sure if he did as she's the one advertising it. I suspect he did too.

Person 1 - broke up freshman year, long distance
Person 2 - went to the same college, still together
Person 3 - long distance the guy cheated year 3

The one I know went to separate colleges but they are still together now that they have both graduated. I don't know them well enough to know if there was a break during college or if they agreed to see other people but I recall seeing his car there over holiday breaks/summers so presumably they kept dating in some capacity.

The one I know who was in a 2 year long relationship broke up half way through freshman year of college.

My DD and her HS BF knew they would break up when college arrives. They stayed close for a while but no longer speak

My friends’ kids all seem to be making life choices based on HS relationships. Like, all of them. This was the exception not the rule in the HS I went to but and I find it strange. But not my kid. So whatever.

Did they split? Go to the same college? Just thinking ahead about junior DD and quite curious about what usually happens after graduation. DD has a good chance at many top colleges and her guy might not even get into a low-ranked state school.
