Ghana is where his family is from. He’s not from there. She’s obviously not from Roanoke, yet. She’s never lived there.

Op here. Thanks PP. I know a few people like yourself and a few like him. From his perspective he’s the only American born child and his parents came to the U.S. just over a year or two before he was born. But all of the relatives outside of his immediate family are back in Ghana. I’ve noticed people often ask where our last name origins are from and for him, that includes his first name.

Op here. 13 years old turning 14 this year.

She can say DC area or more specifically N VA. We live in MD and say DC area because it helps distinguish between MoCo and Baltimore or another region. If someone asks for more specifics we will mention our town. We don’t say DC alone because that implies we live in the city. DH, the kids and myself were all raised in MoCo though DH and I were born at a DC hospital and left the area for a few years.

She's from Virginia. Nobody needs to know the exact coordinates.

It would be strange to have just moved somewhere new and tell your new aquaintances that you are from that place that they likely know better than you.

If I were your daughter, I would say that I'm from northern Virginia but have moved to Roanoke to join family.

DD was born in Fairfax, lived in Ashburn for 9 years, moved to DC for 4 years and is now moving to Roanoke where my family is from. I lived in DC for over 20 years prior to moving to Northern Virginia and back to DC. She’s asked us where does she say that she is from when she moves to Roanoke. Her dad says she is from Roanoke because my family roots are from Roanoke. His reference point is that he says Ghana when asked where he is from though he was born in America. I would say she could say she’s from Virginia (Northern Virginia) but lived in DC for 3 years. FWIW I still say I am from DC.
