A first grader who is not an *exceptionally* strong reader is not going to be able to handle this on his own.

My Father's Dragon is a chapter book, but it's a good first one. Easy text, engaging story. Works well for paired reading as well -- I read a page, you read a page.

In first grade my girl liked the Wellie Wishers American girl books and the Penny books by Kevin Henkes.
Also, the scholastic books that are part of their branches series like Unicorn Diaries , Owl Diaries , and Eerie Elementary. My kids liked those for a few years.

My second grader just started a new series - InvestiGATORS that she says is similar in humor to Dogman.

Last year, she loved Katie Woo and Princess in Black

Try D'Aulaire's Book of Greek Myths. The pictures make you want to read the text.

Any book recommendations for a first grader whose current reading level is at about the "I am ...." by Brad Meltzer series? That is, past the easy readers, but not yet into real chapter books unless very simple; and she still gets intimidated by seeing too many words on the page with no pictures.

She has loved the Twinkle fairy series but we've gone through all the library has. But something like those in subject matter, but a bit more challenging, would be great.

Would prefer not graphic novels and not stuff where the protagonist is overly snotty. We already have plenty of Dogman, Diary of a Wimpy Kid etc from older brother, and she is not quite at that level of humor yet.

thanks!
