The Yoto is fun and a good thing to have for screenfree time, but for a real selection of audiobooks and podcasts and kindle fire kids is better. If they already have one a yoto is a fun thing to have.

Libby and spotify are way better than yoto for older kids. yoto gets so expensive. my kid has listened to all of boxcar children, magic treehouse wings of fire etc on an old phone for free
Sorry I missed you're talking about songs. A tonie box was good for the younger years but don't bother buying a bunch of characters. We have 20 or so but only 3 get regular use despite some of the others being some of their favorite characters. By 3.5yo they'd all moved on to yelling at alexa to play something unless they wanted to hear the tonie stories

Spotify has an million stories on it and already created playlists you can just run. Its not something a 4 year old can do on their own like sticking a tonie on the tonie box, but it has a lot more content for just the monthly subscription
Libby and spotify are way better than yoto for older kids. yoto gets so expensive. my kid has listened to all of boxcar children, magic treehouse wings of fire etc on an old phone for free

We got the Tonie box at 27 months when I felt she was old enough to operate it (earlier, she would have been too busy stuffing the figurines in her mouth to let them make music).
Then we got the Yoto mini when she turned 3 and I felt she was able to put the cards in the slot herself and not lose them. That was a few months ago and we haven’t lost anything (4 tonies and 5 yoto cards). I have occasionally misplaced them while tidying up or hiding from our baby but then I find them later. She is a pretty organized kid and keeps track of her toys.

My older daughter (8) basically “borrowed” the yoto mini I got for my younger son until it basically became hers. She loves using it for her podcasts and we love that our phones are not tied up and we aren’t bothered by requests to change the episode or pause. This Christmas I’m getting her her own plus a pack of make your own cards so she can have a good rotation of podcasts to pick from

With a Yoto we really only use 1 or 2 cards. I have one that I update the playlist for from my phone and I just record over it when I update the playlist.
You could get an mp3 player, iPad, etc to play audiobooks but you would have to navigate the interface for a small child who can’t read.

Tonies have a lot of pieces to keep track up bc of all the little figurines, I agree.
I will say the Yoto player although you can collect a bunch of cards, I just keep them all in like a credit card holder and it takes up virtually no space. Also, all the cards are stored on your phone so if you lose one you can still play it.

For a little kid who loves music and would love to pick his own songs, but whose parents don't want a toy with a ton of pieces to keep track of? The Tonies and Yoto cards seem like a recipe for a disaster.
