Given similar vehicles, that might be the case. But Virginians are notorious for driving cheaper and older cars to minimize the amount of personal property tax they have to pay (Virginia provides a subsidy/credit so those with cars assessed at less than $20K pay minimal taxes). Visit rhe the parking lot at any Big Law firm in the DMV and you’ll see lots of cheaper cars with VA tags and lots of expensive cars with DC and MD tags.

The car tax is not why we do that. The cost of the car tax does not enter my mind when selecting a car.

Drive through neighborhoods in NOVA consisting of $2-4M homes and you’ll see mostly Toyota Camrys and RAV4s, Honda Accords and CRVs, Suburu Imprezas and Foresters, Hyundai’s, Kia’s, and minivans. Drive through similar neighborhoods in DC and MD and you’ll see driveways full of luxury cars.

Oh any short fall will be made up on the backs of Nova tax payers. This is just some scheme to shift taxes to Nova. It’s not like we pay for everything already.

This. Eliminating the tax is easy, making it revenue neutral is impossible.

He will need to figure out where to capture other revenue for the state to make up for the shortfall, which likely would result in tax increases that would make it more obvious that VA isn't actually a lower tax state than DC or MD.
