OP, try a book by Susan Meissner. Her historical fiction books are simply fantastic. Wonderful writing, character development and intriguing story lines.

Alice Munro short stories.
A favorite of mine is John Lanchester’s The Debt to Pleasure. The narrator’s voice is great, the writing is excellent, and it makes me laugh. It’s not a hard read.
When in doubt, Jane Austen.
Julia Child’s My Life in France is very engaging.

Read either Anna Karenina or War and Peace. Remember what a truly brilliant novel feels like, or learn for the first time if you’re a Tolstoy virgin. Don’t worry, they seem intimidating but the chapters are very short and both are page turners.

How can you reframe reading and books in your life the way it is now? What was bringing you joy in reading before that is not happening now?

I mean this in the kindest way, but is it a book problem or a you problem? Why are you apathetic and bored? Is it just about reading or about other things in your life?

I think I’m reading crap, that’s why I’m asking for recommendations.

A lot of bestsellers and viral books are crap.

Can you recommend some books that aren’t?

I read non fiction and memoirs to get me out of slumps. For some reason, it’s more difficult for me to connect with fiction. I lose interest quickly if a novel is overwritten or has basic characters. Nonfiction is straight forward, and usually interesting… even captivating, if you’re lucky !

Contemporary fiction. Though I’m not opposed to classics, memoirs, or even historical fiction.

I used to be a voracious reader, reading every best seller and “viral” book. Now I’m apathetic and bored.

What’s a book that will reintroduce that love again?
