I would absolutely not let an 11 y/o read this.

I think it's completely fine for an 11 year old who enjoys horror. I don't stifle any reading, even if there are older themes.

^^ I meant, I'm suggesting that you watch the movie since it's similar to the book, then it will help you to decide if you want your 11yo to read the book.

No, not appropriate for an 11yo. Yes, I read the book. Just watch the Netflix movie, it's similar.

I won’t watch the movie and I’m an adult.

Maybe they could watch the movie first, might help make it less scary then leaving everything just to imagination (I would suggest you watching the movie first).

OP here. Yes she would absolutely enjoy it, but that's not my question. I was asking if it was appropriate. She loves the horror genre but so far has only read books that are geared toward younger readers.

Since my OP, I've done a quick read through of the book. And I'm going to give it a barely passing grade. It seems mostly psychological/imaginative horror - kind of like Hitchcock, fear of the unknown. There is minimal gore. There is a smattering of f-words. The biggest thing are the suicides, and I've told my child to please talk to me about anything that is disturbing or upsetting.

The amazon reviews are all by adults. It doesn't say anything about age appropriateness. In general, it's marketed as a book for adults.

Yes so when you see a review when an adult says something like this, do you think your 11 year old would enjoy it?

“ Bird Box by John Malerman is absolutely one of the most tensely claustrophobic horror novels I've ever read. Some horror is based on fear of things you see. And some horror is based on fear of things you don't see. Bird Box has a different kind of horror going on - a fear of things that you must not see.”

Yes. I read it. It would be very intense, possibly terrifying, for a tween.

Does your tween have a particular interest in this type of book?

DH bought it for our 11yo child. I tried looking up on Common Sense Media, but it doesn't have any information.

Is it appropriate?
