We’ve tried them all. 1, 301, the western route through culpepper/Gainesville, even the far western route through C’ville. It all sucks. We try for very early or late and on odd days. We try to zig when others zag but just blech.

Then you miss the faster speeds during the least amount of traffic, usually. The problems really start between Richmond and Fredericksburg. And it's a cluster around Quantico, but I haven't found a good way around it OP.

When going from Williamsburg back home, I usually take I-64 to US-301 and take US-301 up across the Governor Nice bridge and into Waldorf. In Waldorf get off US-301 for MD-5 up to the Washington beltway.

I find that this route is less likely to get completely derailed by heavy traffic, so whatever time the GPS has when you set that route, that's when you get there. The normal I-64 to I-95 to I-495 route times fluctuate regularly on weekends, especially busier travel weekends based on various accidents and trucks and assorted other road irritations.

I have to drive back to DC from Norfolk and the mere thought of that Richmond to DC stretch is killing my will to live.

What are your tried and true alternate routes? I’m happy to drive more miles if it means not sitting in that parking lot.
