A) Points for - how many total points a team scored in all of their games.
B) Points against - how many total points a team allowed to be scored in all of their games.
Point differential - the different between A and B.
So if a team scored 45, 55, 28, their points for would be 128.
If a team gave up 34, 34, and 33, their points against would be 100.
Their point differential would be +28 (128 minus 100) If you flipped the above then the differential would a -28 (100 minute 128).
