Same. My mother cheated on all three of her husbands and every boyfriend. She always acted to me like she was a saint for putting up with them and dealing with how difficult they were, but aside from the one who abused me they all seemed benign. My father's only advice the first time I was going on a date while living with him was "Respect your own boundaries." Which I interpreted to mean "Make a boundary and stick to it." Oh, and he also insisted I have enough money to get home on my own. He remarried a woman who was suffocating as a stepmother but seemed to love him a lot and want to do things for him. She was very talkative and high energy and he kind of smiled and rolled his eyes a lot.

Among other things:

- don't make a priority out of someone who considers you an option.

- don't waste your prime dating years with someone who is not a long term prospect.

My father never said a thing. My mother told me to marry someone who was the same religion and came from an intact family. I guess that advice is fine but I can think of a LOT more advice I would have given.

+100. Basically I looked for someone the opposite of both of them. I have a very happy marriage.

Well I may have broken both of your mother’s love advice but I’ve been very happily married for 28 years. I don’t recall any love advice from my mother though my father had some good advice about men and what they want. He was right.

Just curious what advice other peoples parents gave them. Right or wrong my mother told me when I first started dating in college to never say I love the other person first and to marry someone who loves me just a touch more than I love them.
