Probably attempted insurance fraud.

That’s my point if I leave safe distance other cars pile in and crowd in the space, so I back up again and cars again pile in.

On another thread it sounds like I may have been target of a scam?

Yep, it's hard. There's almost always an impatient idiot waiting around to cut in front of anyone who leaves more than a 3 ft gap.

I leave a safe distance in front of me, then somebody cuts into that space. Solution?
Ease up on the gas and reestablish my safe following distance. Might this happen more than once on a drive? Yes. It's OK.
It's hard not to get agitated, flash your high beams, tailgate and blow your horn. But you can do it.

Not op but what’s up with Tesla? I almost hit one - same situation as OP but not on highway. The idiot did hard braking and I almost rear ended him. Yes, he was driving Tesla

Safe distance varies by speed. Usually 2.5 car lengths for speeds under 50 mph is enough for me to stop on a dime if the car in front stops. 3.5 car lengths or more if I’m going faster or inclement weather or sunshine.

If I’m maintaining 3 car lengths in fast moving traffic I’m maintaining the same speed as the car in front of me, lessens the urge for others to cut in, and I’m paying attention to at least all 3 cars ahead of the car in front of me if one of those guys brakes, I slow down before the car in front of me brakes

Someone mentioned Teslas up thread, they can stop without braking! It’s a single pedal driving system

Sounds like you should stay in the right lane.

I simply drive like a Grandma. Slow, lots of space. A calm ride.

Maintain a safe driving/stopping distance. I can readily lament how many drivers I see going too fast and too close to other cars on the highway. It's even worse, when we are in rush hour traffic - especially pickup trucks. Someone help this make sense...

Really, no one has any perspective on how they handle highway speeds and sudden accidents?

We had a near accident when a car slammed on its breaks in front of us on the freeway. We stopped inches from the car; not sure why they stopped as traffic was slowing at 65. Thankfully we weren’t rear ended either.

We have tried to keep more space between cars on freeway but cars constantly pull in front of us and we have to slow down to create space.

How ready is the typical driver to a car suddenly coming to a stop on the freeway? It requires constant vigilance when going at freeway speeds
