Cannot believe people do this for a leg up. This sounds terrible.


Leg up or DC is just getting it out of the way so s/he can do better things than sit in Geometry for a whole year learning nothing.


Why would they learn nothing if they “sit through a whole year” of geometry in 8th grade? You would seriously subject your 13 yr old to 6-8+ hours of geometry per day over the summer? Just so they can take Alg II in 8th? If they were that great at math they wouldn’t need to take full courses over the summer to get ahead.


Many kids have already taken a year of geometry (via RSM or AOPS). They just need the checkmark by the "official" FCPS course. These kids wont' spend 6-8 hours per day - they do the single hour of lecture and race through the work in 30 minutes. It's not hard if you already know it (and are talented in math).

There no necessary or sufficient conditions to "get into" TJ. But it's a comparison game with 2500+ applicants each showing their own pile of achievements. Alg2 on DC's own pile can't hurt.


No, because the admissions committee knows that being in Alg 2 isn’t an “achievement”

If your kid can’t take geometry during the school year, then oh well. Packing a year’s worth of geometry content into 2-3 months is a terrible idea plus ruins their summer. Their grasp on the material will be no where near what it would be if they took it over a year or even over half the year. You want to set them up for success for upper level math beyond geometry.
