My kid got As in math 4 and math 5 at TJ. But struggling with BC despite being recommended for it by math 5 teacher. It is serious business.

Whether they do good in BC Calc depends on their grades and how difficult/easy both Math 4 and Math5 were. If they got an A+ in Math4 and Math5, then they are more than prepared or Calc BC.

Yes, if math 5 is done as regular semester course, not rushed as a summer course.

Well, there are many students who graduate from FCPS base high schools who not only complete AP Calc BC but take Multivariable/linear and other advanced math courses by senior year. I would assume that to be the case at other public high schools across the nation. So your applicant would be competing with many of those students for a T25 spot depending on their interested major.

At TJ, Calc BC is prereq/coreq for many math, physics, computer science, and research courses. Without Calc BC, they would be missing out on enrolling in any of those courses. College admissions expect to see students taking the most challenging courses accessible to them at their high school.

No, most take BC at least until 2021.

Your student will be disadvantaged. But if they do poorly in higher math classes, that will be even worse for them.

About half of students take Calc BC after Math 5, and may follow it up with other advanced math courses. Of the other half, most take Calc AB and then enroll in Calc BC. The bottom 10 to 15% do just Calc AB, the minimum required to graduate.

Regarding getting admitted to a T25 with just Calc AB, that depends on the major being applied to or the student's skin color.

My DC is a junior at TJ (first class under new system). A lot of their friends are taking AB Calc including some who dropped down from BC. Also has some friends who won’t be taking Calc until senior year (freshman year math 1: geometry )

The new admission system resulted in many more students who will only reach Calculus senior year which was a very small percentage of kids (single digit percentage) before the changes to admissions.
