No one cares about "colonial excesses" except perhaps you.

People also forget Diana's popularity was actually waning sharply in the last year or so of her life when it became clearer she was running around with a drug addled playboy. Her life was only getting messier and messier post divorce. The early death was her saving grace, in a way.

A lot of people liked that she wasn't perfect as well. She was an enigma.

It's not just a pretty face or a practiced smile that makes you the next Princess Diana.

You would have to have "a cultural moment", you would have to grip the culture in a way that is unique to that time and place and really make people know you ACTUALLY love them.

There's a fair bit of charisma and luck that plays into it as well.

There are many decent women in European royal families who seem to live a low profile royal life, look cute in photos, and don't make headlines for jerk behavior. This also applies to Kate Middleton, IMO.

But Princess Diana? That's next level stuff.

Kate will never be Diana because Diana WAS the original blueprint of breaking the mold in order to reach people. If Kate hugs people, OK...Diana hugged first. If Kate gets down to talk to children, OK...Diana already did that. Diana was already the mom who would run in a school race, go to an amusement park with her kids, etc., etc. Not to say Kate's not warm and compassionate and approachable, but Diana already did all that. Diana was the first royal to show vulnerability, accessibility, humanity and a big heart. It's great that others show that, but they won't be the first. Diana paid the price and now everyone else can do it, too, because there is precedent.

This^. She has it all but short of a victimhood card. Diana is flawless and a martyr in eyes of her fans. You can't exceed that.

I don't recognize any of those people and Kate is liked but not beloved the way Diana was.

The thing about Diana was that she projected great vulnerability, and then she was known to be a very empathetic person, at least in her charitable work. That's why people identified with her because everyone feels vulnerable sometimes and we all want to think of ourselves as kind and giving. Diana reflected what we most cherish in ourselves.

Kate will never be Diana because she carefully guards herself and her family and presents a public face that may've little to nothing to do with her private life. More like the late Queen. It's probably healthier for her but it tempers the love the public might have.

Diana was truly a double edged sword in the royal family.

They're all leached.

Diana POW. Camellia STILL got hate for being the “side chick” at Charles Coronation since people still love Diana and feel angry on her behalf.
