AP pre calc should replace non-honors precalc, if it exists.

The main purpose of the class is to show how weighted GPAs are meaningless.

Agree. AP precalc should be the on-level option. Honors is more challenging.

So if my son is a strong math student should he take AP or honors? Has close to 100% in honors alg2 and never studies.

No one knows and schools are making a mess of it.

AP pre calc should replace non-honors precalc, if it exists.

Teacher is recommending it since kid is doing very well in Algebra 2 and has high MAP-M scores. Thinking might as well and then move into Calc BC.

This was us last year. I asked the dept head for input and he said the same thing. But DS thinks the honors class sounds harder and wishes he’d taken that instead of AP.

Did they make it sounds like the AP pre calc was the harder class? I feel like that is what my son's school is doing but sounds like they are messing it up.

Wonder if being done differently at different schools. Next year is the first year being offered.

Would not be the first thing my kid's school messed up and gave us bad advice on.

Don't know, our school doesn't offer it.

Teacher is wrong. If kid is taking AP calc BC then there is absolutely no point in taking AP precalc

Thanks for the link to old thread. Why would AP Pre-Calc be easier than Honors?

Because it was created to help kids who otherwise wouldn't take calc to get into that track. It's not a college-level course. Honors precalc is for kids who were always going to calc. AP is therefore less rigorous.

Here one take on it: https://saratogafalcon.org/content/precalculus-honors-classes-should-not-transform-curriculum-to-conform-to-ap-precalculus/

Precalculus is not a college level course, this is a path for kids who wouldn’t otherwise get to calculus in high school. Different from other APs.

Is AP Pre-Calc any harder than honors Pre-calc?
