Aldi has organic grass-fed ground beef and it was $4.99 for a one-pound package for years...2014 is when I started comparison shopping so since then until 2021. It's 6.99 now.

Ground beef for $5/pound actually sounds cheap. They ground beef I buy is around $8/lb and fresh packs of chicken breast that have 2-3 breasts in them are around $10

That does not seem to match the information from CPI, which does break down by various goods.

Some things are affected by particular issues, though. Eggs went through the roof due to a combo of a bad bird flu year and new regulations requiring outdoor time. Coffee has had problems due to weather and political instability. I think skme produce has also been really affected by weather in the last couple of years plus a lack of migrant workers to pick things like berries.

Beef really should cost more. It’s terrible for the environment and historically those costs have been pushed onto government to pay the costs of climate change instead of being carried by the industry and consumer. (Like how we all paid the costs of health disease caused by tobacco.). I love love love beef but also recognize it is way too cheap considering it’s true cost.

I personally think food prices are really going to go up in the upconing decades as the weather continues to be more erratic and other countries aren’t going to just keep shipping their food to us. Americans need to adjust their budgets to account for this.
