I ask my high schoolers who they would like to thank. As both have an IEP, there are a lot of potential teachers. Both pick from 2-8 each year. I then just get them each a small gift card and the kids write them notes. I think it’s more meaningful when the kids choose who to thank and feel they’re old enough to know who goes out of their way to help them.

We do gift cards for the teachers who have gone above and beyond. I have one at Blair and one at Northwood. Both have had 4-5 teachers a year that we gave a holiday gift.

I myself taught at a low income HS for 4 years. Most years, 10-15 students gave me something. Often handmade, but sometimes store bought items. I got lots of cards or notes though and I still have every single one. They are such mood boosters!

HS teachers deserve the love, too! You can send e-gift cards to their email or put something small in their mailbox so your kid doesn’t have to deal with it. Even a nice thank you note goes a long way.

NP. My oldest is in 9th grade. I know the gifting rules, but is it common in HS?

Not as common as ES (or even MS), but who cares if your family wants to get a gift for a teacher? It's really up to you to gift or not gift. Don't think so much about it.

I was told not to gift HS teachers, is it true?
