Get what makes sense for day to day and then rent something for 3-4 roadtrips. That’s not a lot of trips per year to be making a decision on.

I also think another minivan would be best for your situation.

I have a Ford Explorer. It's 8 years old but still drives like new. I never see me buying another vehicle smaller than my Explorer.

We have a Lexus RX350 and there's NO way you are getting a wheelchair and luggage for 4-5 people inside the trunk.

If you want to haul 4-5 people with all that gear you should aim for a 6-7 seater IMO. It does sound like a minivan is what you need..

My MIL uses a walker and I think most SUVs are too tall for her to get into. She doesn't drive anymore but her husband keeps a small step stool in his mid-sized SUV for her to use. And she is not a short woman.

A smaller SUV or cross over maybe a little lower to the ground than full-sized SUV.

Right as he's moving out, my in-laws are moving in, one of them wheelchair bound. So it appears that we'll need a vehicle with medium height (our sedan is too low for them to get in/out) and enough storage space for road trip luggage and a wheelchair. We will be traveling up the east coast a lot (4-8 hour trips, maybe 3-4 times a year) to visit family with in-laws in tow and maybe one or both kids. I suspect the kids' participation will drop over time.

Our needs:
- Need an SUV; not sure if it should be a 5 or 7-seater.
- Don't care for all-electric; Hybrid/PHEV is fine if the cost makes sense.
- Would like to avoid paying more than MSRP.
- No rush. Buy this vehicle over the next few months but prepared to move quickly.
- We generally keep our cars till they die.

Appreciate it if anyone who's been shopping around recently can share their wisdom..

could this fit your needs?

Sorry but in your situation I would absolutely get another minivan. Test drive a Pacifica Limited - it's gorgeous inside.

I’m sure you’re ready to be done with a minivan but it sounds like another minivan would be the most functional for you.

I’d suggest the Lexus RX hybrid. It will be a smooth ride for the road trips though will only fit 5. However, unless you drive a massive SUV the last row will be mostly unusable by your adult child (and definitely not an elderly person).

If you’re looking for something cheaper, id look at the Toyota SUVs. The Highlander or Grand Highlander.

If you really want to make four six-hour trips every year with 4-5 adults including one in a wheel chair maybe just get another minivan? Or maybe one of your kids can drive a separate car?
