Skip the "different candidate" part. The rest is good.

A personally written message, yes, I respond.

A form letter, or auto-generated email. No.

What benefit would be gained from responding?

From a person? Yes, I always respond. Why not. I send a few lines.

I had to send a rejection letter to a candidate I really liked because another candidate was stronger. She sent a really nice response asking me to keep her in mind. I did, I recommended her to another manager hiring for a similar position, and she got hired!

So I say yes, respond politely and indicate your continued interest (if you are interested).

Yeah honestly this costs nothing and it would be silly not to even if you’re just responding to a bot. Why not? It takes 30 seconds.

Is it from a real person or autogenerated? And did you interview or just send an application?

If all you did was apply online and get a generic email, no response.

If you went through an interview(s) and actually met people at the company/received a personalized email, then I’d thank them for their time and maybe include a statement about how you’d love to be considered for any future positions that would be a good fit. (But make it sound nicer than what I wrote).

Who cares? Ignore it and move on.

I used to muster up enough to just say thank your thanks for letting me know. But now I don't respond anymore. What's proper protocol?
