Ball can’t get to the goalie until it gets through the defense…

Had to go through 10 players to get to the goalie. Sounds like a team that needs help on defense and midfield not just goalie issues.

Our team coaches defense. A lot of footwork, stance, kills, cradles, ball mastery, poking/jabbing, etc.

We're with MYS, but it all depends on the coach not the club.

Our team weekly has short mock scrimmages against the year older or year younger teams where they work on defensive concepts (and offensive). One week will be pressing schemes. One week will be mid block, etc.

I would love to know which teams are doing well (or not well) with the defensive training.

This was similar to our experiences as well.

Do you mind sharing the team?

OP, yes, DD is similar age and defending, moving as a unit, team positioning has been a huge area of focus since U10.

Nope. No. Nada

That's why so many people suffer the delusion of how good their kids are as an attacking player, until they get older and start running into well trained true defenders.

Not sure if certain sessions are intended to be defense focused but our club does a lot of 1v1s and small group exercises at that age and I regularly notice or hear the coach give individual and group pointers about how to defend.

At a previous club, only the defenders got targeted feedback and coaching about defending. My kids were always in attacking positions so I actually got them private coaching bc I noticed that even when they tracked back, their defensive skills were dismal.

While both are still mostly slotted in attacking positions, their defensive skills are solid and both have started as defenders altho they are still mostly in attacking positions.

It is a rare coach that actually coaches.

Nope. Offense is everything. It’s what parents want for their kids and since they pay, that’s what the focus is on.

Does your team spend any time above u11 or u12 training your kids how to play the defender role? Like really teach those kids tactics and positioning and strategy? Or do players get slotted into those spots? Now that my kid is 14 I'm trying to recall any trainings since ulittle where they worked on those skills.
