And to the poster who told me to land the helicopter, I asked for an idea of which heft sweatshirt to buy my son for xmas since he doesn’t wear a jacket, I didn’t say I was battling with him over wearing a jacket. I am guessing you are extrapolating based on some battles in your own home, and I am sorry for that.

Bizarre that you’re on a DMV website from North Carolina asking questions about a son that goes to school in New England?

My main concern about the Carhartt sweater is that it would be heavy and impossible to wash.

Great point re the sweatshirt - I have a very heavy warm sweatshirt that takes forever to dry. My kid is also at BC! What boots does your son wear there? Like OP, mine didn’t wear a coat or boots etc in HS, unless skiing.

To answer OP's question, that Carhartt sweatshirt (I assume it is the heavy duty Rain Defender series) is about as warm as it gets for hoodies. I have one and it is just as warm as most of my winter coats. However, it is only rain repellent, and won't stop the wind as well as something with an outer shell.

Sounds like it may be the best you can hope for, until get gets cold and decides for himself he needs something warmer.

I clicked on this because my son is a sophomore at Boston College. I honestly never asked him if he wears a jacket! I know he has some jackets at school.
Hmmm-but I think the Carhardt sweatshirt is a great idea...that brand is really popular with this age group. Try it.

I went to college in Maine and a LOT of the boys wore shorts during the winter. I'm not sure a SUPER heavy coat or sweatshirt is the way to go, because layering is best, but something that's decently heavy and water resistant would likely get worn.

LOL i live in Maine and this is how it goes way below 30 too!! I think my 17yo wears his winter jacket when he goes skiing, otherwise just hoodies etc. That said, wet sleety weather in Jan -March can be miserable, some kind of warm jacket with water resistance is a good thing to have even i they don't wear a lot. Just don't spend a ton on the "best" because there's a decent chance it will get lost.

This is a battle I stopped fighting when my son was 10. If he’s cold he will put on a jacket. Provide him with an appropriate coat since I assume he’s still financially dependent. But ffs stop helicoptering. He’s a college student.

Live in southern NH. Most high schoolers aren't wearing their winter coats yet. Even my 5th grader complains when I tell him he needed to start at least bringing his plus gloves to school. To be fair, the early mornings have been cold but it hasn't been awful yet for NE weather. I haven't broken out my winter coat yet, even to walk the dog.

That said, I agree with 1447's suggestion. There will be a time when he will want the winter coat. He will also want some kind of work type boot. I've found the ankle length seem to be the most popular.

My kid is in NYC and wears a down hooded north face jacket if it’s really cold. However, a sweatshirt or fleece jacket is worn most fall and winter.

He may not want a winter jacket now, but he will when he goes back. Get something that has a temperature rating near or below zero. If his campus is hilly, get something windproof and not a puffer. Once it's February and there's a minus 15 windchill, he'll be happy he has something warm

Somewhat puffy type of down jacket. Highly recommend visiting an outlet mall near you for Columbia, North Face, Eddie Bauer, etc.

Does he wear a winter jacket around campus in the winter?

Mine is a freshman and resists the idea of a winter jacket (I suspect he will change his mind when he returns for second semester …). We live in NC so my son has never had to wear a winter jacket regularly (I do, for the record).

I want to get him a Carhartt sweatshirt for Christmas, and saw they make one called heavyweight and even one that is heavyweight with rain repellent. Wondering if one of these can “sub” for a winter jacket in the mind of a college student.

Also, if yours does wear a winter jacket, is it his ski/snow jacket or does he have a cheaper one he wears around campus.
