If it's getting smelly, definitely get a new one. I'm guessing your kid probably has some puberty hormones going and that makes a huge difference.
My kids' hoodies (which are worn over shirts) pretty much never smell even after several days of wearing them. We wash once a week or when visibly dirty, whichever comes first.
